A 20-year-old man died on Wednesday after being thrashed by a mob for allegedly stealing a buffalo in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly city, police said.

Shahrukh Khan, who was accompanied by two others, had gone to Bholapur village in the cantonment area where they were beaten by a group of men, said Bareilly’s senior superintendent of police Muniraj, adding his family members have lodged a complaint against two men who took Shahrukh to the village.

According to the complaint submitted to police by Shahrukh’s brother Mohd Firoz, two men – Majid Ali and Pappu – took his brother with them on Tuesday evening. Shahrukh didn’t return home till late that night and on Wednesday morning, Firoz received a call from police telling him to reach the hospital

“I saw my brother lying on a hospital bad…. he had injuries all over his body. He told me the name of Majid and Ali and passed away moments later,” said Firoz, alleging the duo had given Shahrukh some drugs and took him Bholapur village where he was attacked by people,” he added.

Based on his complaint, police have registered an FIR against Majid, Pappu and

‘some unknown’ for murder.

“Residents of Bholapur village have claimed that Shahrukh along with Majid and Pappu were caught stealing a buffalo. This apparently enraged the villagers who attacked them,” said the SSP.

Gajendra Pal of Bholapur has also submitted a police complaint alleging that the trio were stealing his buffalo.

“When I saw the trio taking the animal, I alerted the villagers and tried to stop them. Two of them fled by jumping in a nullah (ditch) but we managed to catch Shahrukh,” he said, adding that a few villagers attacked Shahrukh and he called the police to stop them.

Shahrukh, who used to work as a tailor, had recently returned from Dubai for Eid.
